In a recent interview Steven Wilson said:
I’d rather hear Dave Gilmour playing one note and break my heart, than hearing Joe Satriani playing 300 notes and not touch me in any way at all.
I agree with that, but not fully. The only part I disagree with is “Joe Satriani”. I think he just picked the wrong guitarist.
And to those wondering if he really said that. Yep, he actually did…

I’ve said it before, I’m going to say it again, Music is art, not a competition.

gilmour is a amazing guitarist but hes not god , neither is clapton , hendrix , syd barret, or frank zappa , i personally don’t believe in top 10 or 50 greatest guitarist. I just like the song and their style , rock hero idol worship is just so silly and wrong on so many levels
I think “controversial” is just an exageration. Some musicians are too worried about technique and forget about feeling the music. Some people are great with some instruments, but is amazing how others with a few notes can take you to another world.

He’s only exposing his own taste and feelings, there’s nothing controversial nor competitive about that. As for a “recent” interview? That quote has been around for like 6 years.
I give Steve a pass on this quote. If any of the 90’s grunge guitarists said it I’d tell them to stop making excuses for not practicing. Steve can play very well, and he puts in a solid 40 hours a week working on his craft, whether it’s writing , mixing , mastering, piano or bass playing – becoming a better overall musician. He’s no slacker.
